Nature photography is an infinitely fascinating and endlessly varied activity.  Our particular bias is toward ecosystem photographs.  With a background in ecology it is fun to look for examples of ecosystem function and interactions. 

Looking east from 6,500 feet elevation on the East side of the Sandia Mountains, East of Albuquerque, NM.  The sun was just rising.  The sun behind the hills and the colors in the early morning clouds begged for a picture.

This kind of rainbow needs bright sun from behind to refract the colors back to you.  Since New Mexico storms are frequently small storm cells surrounded by clear sky this happens fairly often.  

Unfortunately, the real thing is way better than a picture

This area was logged and burned before 1900 and this is what has grown up since then.  The picture is taken at about 10,000 feet elevation in the Sangre de Christo mountains NE of Santa Fe, NM.

You can tell the trees are getting old by the amount of dead and down trees.  The density of the canopy is low and the trees are not especially healthy.  

It makes a nice picture though and the abundance of green is soothing to the eyes after the desert harshness downhill.
